Chargers Swept by Highland in Showdown for 1st Place

With first place in the Arrowhead Conference on the line, Highland walked away with a sweep of the Carl Sandburg College softball team Thursday afternoon at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
The Cougars improved to 7-1 in the conference after winning 7-6 and 14-5, pushing the Chargers (5-19, 4-4) three games back in the league standings.

Key Moment
The Chargers took a 3-2 lead into the fifth before Highland went ahead for good with a five-run inning. Lauren Cramer’s tiebreaking, two-run single proved to be the game winner.
Sandburg Star of the Game
Lizzie Malcolm (Milan, Ill./Alleman) finished 2 for 4 and drove in three for the Chargers. The freshman second baseman had a two-run triple in the third and added an RBI single in the fifth.

Key Moment
After the Chargers scored three in the fourth to tie the game at 5, Highland regained the lead with a three-run frame of its own. Karlee Doege’s go-ahead single put the Cougars up for good.

Droste finished with five hits on the afternoon after going 2 for 4 with a run, two RBIs and a stolen base in the nightcap.

The Chargers travel to face Joliet in a doubleheader at noon Saturday. Sandburg’s doubleheader scheduled for Friday afternoon at Bryant & Stratton has been postponed to 1 p.m. April 23 because of forecasted inclement weather.
